Totti Wins Golden Shoe

After Real Madrid's title winning victory against Mallorca, in which Van Nistelrooy suffered a first half injury and was unable to add to his tally, Francesco Totti has ended up as the top scorer in the top European leagues.

Francesco Totti has won the Golden Shoe award as Europe’s top League scorer, with 26 goals in the Serie A.

Until this evening, Ruud van Nistelrooy was also in the race for the award, but the Dutchman had to leave the pitch due to an injury in the first half of Real Madrid's title-deciding game against Mallorca.

This is the second consecutive year that an Italian has managed to win this prestigious award.
Luca Toni won it last year after he scored a mammoth 31 times in Serie A for Fiorentina.

The contest is decided with a coefficient system based on the difficulty of scoring in each nation.
With two points awarded for each goal scored in either England, Italy or Spain, Totti earned 52 points, while van Nistelrooy ended with 50.

Alfonso Alves, despite scoring 34 goals for Heerenveen in Holland, finished in 2nd place, with 51 points.
